I Was Saying “Boo-Urns”

I Was Saying “Boo-Urns”

On October 27th, during the fifth World Series game between the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals, the Jumbotron in National Park showed a shot of President Donald Trump, his wife, and a group of GOP lawmakers who were attending the game. If you follow sports, or politics, or know anyone who does, you probably know what happened next: Nationals fans booed the president, also throwing in a cheer of, “Lock him up!” for good measure. Reading about it the next day, my reaction was a bemused chuckle.

But it didn’t end there.

Autumn for Basic Bitches

Autumn in Chicago can be hard on a Basic Bitch. Society tries to convince us that we’re the only ones who love cozying up with a pumpkin spice latté and our favorite Charlotte Brontë novel. So I’ve decided to make a list of the top 6 things us Basic Bitches are looking forward to this season in the hopes that we can all unabashedly enjoy them together.

Five Songs For Your Halloween Mix

Five Songs For Your Halloween Mix

If you’re like me, you make mixes. I love putting together a series of songs for a person or for an event or even just for myself. I need just the flimsiest of reasons to open up my itunes, fire up the cd burner, and look for a group of songs.

However, it’s Halloween… A GREAT TIME TO MAKE A MIX!

Joe vs. Punk II: A Love Letter

It’s astounding how few things I cared about when I was 15. I didn’t care about my grades, I didn’t care about Pop Culture or current music. I certainly didn’t care how I dressed (a trend that continues to this day), but if you asked me in October of 2004, just a few weeks after my 15th birthday, what I did care about, I would have said “Joe vs. Punk II.”

Impeachment In The Time Of Mitch McConnell

Impeachment In The Time Of Mitch McConnell

Let’s take a look at the political climate today.

A new Fox News poll released yesterday had 51 percent of registered voters saying that President Donald Trump should be both impeached and removed from office. A Politico article suggests that, as of the beginning of last month, Democrats had the votes to begin an impeachment inquiry. The president’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, is appearing on Laura Ingraham’s show almost every night, presumably because he is trying to make sure he seems like the most unhinged person on Fox News every day of the goddamned week. And, as I’m writing this, two associates of Giuliani have just been arrested on campaign finance charges.

It has not been a good few weeks for the Trump White House. Though, to be fair, it’s unsure if they’ve ever been able to string a few good weeks together.

However, if you are a fan of this President and his administration, fear not. Things may look bleak and things may look rough, but Donald Trump isn’t going anywhere. He’s going to stay right where he is until the next election, of which his odds of winning are, AT WORST, 50-50.

And, if President Trump can somehow get re-elected next year, he will have one man to thank: Mitch McConnell.

Nothing Lasts Forever (not even my knowledge of Die Hard)

Nothing Lasts Forever (not even my knowledge of Die Hard)

We all need surprising moments in our life. Little things that happen that take us by surprise and make us look at ourselves, and the world, from a different angle. Sometimes those are big events, and sometimes they’re little things. But they’re always powerful and need to be respected and observed.

For me, one of those moments was when I realized that “Die Hard” was based on a book.

The California Baseball Bucket List Tour

I’ve never really thought much about a bucket list. Perhaps I should. Sure, when I was invincible in my 20s and life was forever, it was easier to put it off until later. Now, however, I am in my 30s and life is almost over, so it’s time to start spending my time more effectively. There’s still no solid bucket list item, except for one: I want to see a baseball game in all thirty Major League ballparks within my adult life.

My 50 Greatest Wrestlers of All Time

This is the most difficult thing i’ve ever done in my life. And yes, i’m counting the decision to buy a house, to propose to my wife, leave jobs, and everything else. You see, those were just moments, but wrestling…wrestling is forever.

A while back, I came up with the idea to roll out my 50 greatest wrestlers of all time. I wanted to launch it on this week, with AEW debuting and NXT setting up in direct competition with them on a competing network, along with the move of Smackdown to Fox.

And then I started doing it…and I came to a screeching halt. You see, I had to try to make a decision. Was I going to write about what might be considered the 50 greatest wrestlers of all time? Or was I going to write about my own opinion, my 50 greatest wrestlers of all time? The guys I thought deserve recognition as the greatest competitors to do this stupid little thing that I love so dearly.

Slowly, I was able to build a list. It wasn’t easy, and I guarantee it’s going to piss a lot of people off. I didn’t just go full smark and list a bunch of indy guys. I took into account wrestlers impact on wrestling and pop culture. I took into account their ability to cut promos, and perform on the biggest stages. I crossed over multiple wrestling generations to build the list I thought was the best. I didn’t include some guys because I just didn’t think they were as good as others(Ultimate Warrior) and I didn’t include some guys because they murdered their family (Chris Benoit). That’s the nice thing about it being my list. I created all the rules for it.

I also found that there were so many people I wanted on this list that just didn’t have a place. Arn Anderson is one of the best tag team wrestlers of all time and was a founding member of the Four Horseman, but I couldn’t find room for him. Diamond Dallas Page and Booker T were two of the only guys who kept WCW afloat as long as it did. They were great. But there just wasn’t enough room.

And with apologies to Big Bossman, Matt Bourne, William Regal, Bobby Eaton, Tetsuya Naito, Ultimo Dragon, Chyna, PCO, Dynamite Kid, Jeff Jarrett, and Stan Hansen, here are my 50 Greatest Wrestlers of all time….

Joker Is Insanely Good!

Todd Phillips’ Joker launches the DC BLACK side of the DCU

Growing up reading Batman comics as a kid in the 1980’s, I witnessed the evolution of this iconic villain from the earliest versions inspired by “The Man Who Laughs” to Ceasar Romaro’s slapstick antics as the “Clown Prince of Crime,” to the more twisted and deranged murderous psychopath that is the Joker of modern day. Todd Phillips gives fans of the character everything they could’ve asked for in an origin story for The Joker.

Sturgill Simpson’s Sound & Fury Bucks Outlaw Revival

Sturgill Simpson’s Sound & Fury Bucks Outlaw Revival

In Sound & Fury, Sturgill Simpson doesn’t make music for you. He makes it despite you.

“Southern samurai glam rock” may sound like an excerpt from a lazy game of Mad Libs, but it’s the best description I could muster for Sound & Fury, the fourth studio album from Grammy winning artist Sturgill Simpson.

Once the heir apparent to the fiefdom Dave Cobb built for outlaw country revival, the main thread holding each of Sturgill’s albums together is how much they distance themselves from the last. None more so than Sound & Fury, which takes any trace of bluegrass twang and buries it under a heap of sleethy synth-rock riffs.  Continue reading “Sturgill Simpson’s Sound & Fury Bucks Outlaw Revival”
