FBC 2023 Oscar Coverage, Part VI: Recapping the nominations…

FBC 2023 Oscar Coverage, Part VI: Recapping the nominations…

When the sun rose and the dust settled on the announcement of the nominations for the 95th Academy Awards ceremony, Everything Everywhere All At Once was the big winner with eleven chances to win a shiny gold naked dude holding a sword. All Quiet On The Western Front continued to gain steam and go from the best chance to win International Feature to now seeming to be a legit contender for Best Picture. Women Talking, a movie which underperformed at SAG and BAFTA, thankfully got nominated for both Best Picture and Best Screenplay. Jackass Forever was robbed for Best Documentary. And I was 39/50 in my predictions. Not great, but serviceable.

Here are my immediate takeaways from today’s announcements…

FBC 2023 Oscar Coverage, part V: Predicting the nominations

FBC 2023 Oscar Coverage, part V: Predicting the nominations

With the nominations less than 24 hours away, you can feel the excitement in the air, and by that, I mean the air around me!

I’ve been predicting the Oscar nominations for Fancy Boys for three years with a very respectable 80% success rate. I think 2022 has the chance to be the most unpredictable Oscars in years, but that could also make it the most fun. Every year, I have a pick from my heart, whether it is Lupita Nyong’o for Us or Nicolas Cage for Pig, and I’m gonna try and avoid that and just go with my gut of what I think the Oscar voter is going to say.

Unfortunately, that is challenging in 2023. This feels like the one year where every category has some wild cards. Each category has about 3-4 locks with then another 2-5 hopefuls going for the other spots. And there are some real dogfights here. Remember how I said Michelle Williams running for Lead Actress was going to ruin the chances of a worthy actress? I did not realize it, but the actress getting hosed was Williams herself! Universal should have listened to me.

So, here we go. The nominees will be…

FBC 2023 Oscar Coverage, Part IV: What the nominees SHOULD be (but most definitely won’t)

FBC 2023 Oscar Coverage, Part IV: What the nominees SHOULD be (but most definitely won’t)

So here we are, eight days away from the announcement of the Oscar nominations, and that’s gonna be a lot of fun for me. I’ll get to my predictions a week from today. But first, instead of writing about what the Academy is going to screw up, I thought I would talk about what would happen if there was one lone member of the Academy: me. I will be giving my nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, the four acting categories, the two screenwriting categories, and Best Animated Feature. Though, let it be said here and now: I would have nominated Jackass Forever for Best Documentary Feature.

This would be my 2023 Oscars ballot. It is perfect. Come @ me, you film nerds:

FBC 2023 Oscar Coverage, Part III: What the hell is Universal doing with Michelle Williams’ nomination?`

FBC 2023 Oscar Coverage, Part III: What the hell is Universal doing with Michelle Williams’ nomination?`

Without a doubt, one of the best performances in film last year was the amazing turn Michelle Williams had as Mitzi in The Fabelmans. Williams, a four-time Oscar nominee, is clearly one of the best of her generation and shows it in the new Spielberg film as she plays the mother of a young filmmaker. We see her love of art and freedom and watch as she channels that into her son. And one of the best scenes of the year comes when one of her son’s movies shows her something about herself she didn’t even realize.

And so it’s a shame that Universal is campaigning her as a Lead Actress role. Here are the four reasons why.

FBC 2023 Oscar Coverage, Part II: Does anyone remember laughter (the Academy does not…)

FBC 2023 Oscar Coverage, Part II: Does anyone remember laughter (the Academy does not…)

In an earlier article, I mentioned that this was an amazing year for theatrical comedies, and that is a statement that I stand by. Which is why it is so heartbreaking that the pure comedies which were released in 2022 will get the bare minimum amount of love when the Oscars nominations come out in a few weeks. It would be funny if the Academy believed in comedies which, if you haven’t caught on already, they do not.

FBC 2022 Oscar Coverage, Part X: What My Oscar Nominations Would Have Been

FBC 2022 Oscar Coverage, Part X: What My Oscar Nominations Would Have Been

So, I’ve been predicting the nomination, and I’ve been feeling strangely good about my picks, which is almost a guarantee that I’m going to crash and burn Sunday night. But, while I have given my predictions for what I thought would win and be nominated, I haven’t said what my personal nominees would have been had the Oscars been left up to me, which seems like a pretty great idea, now that I think about it.

So, here is what I would have nominated. Leaving out a few categories out (International Feature, all shorts, Best Documentary) because I don’t feel like I’ve seen enough to make a well-educated group of nominees.

But, here we go. The nominees are…

FBC 2022 Oscar Coverage, Part V: Predicting The Winners (Part 2)

FBC 2022 Oscar Coverage, Part V: Predicting The Winners (Part 2)

Ok, in my last Oscars column, I predicted the screenplay categories. On to supporting performances!

One of my favorite things about the supporting categories this year is that both Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst are nominated for The Power Of The Dog, in which they are a married couple both in the movie AND in real life. Something about that just warms my heart, y’all.

Ok. Let’s get predicting!

FBC 2022 OSCAR COVERAGE- PART II: NOMINATION RECAP (or, The Power Of The Power Of The Dog)

FBC 2022 OSCAR COVERAGE- PART II: NOMINATION RECAP (or, The Power Of The Power Of The Dog)

When the dust settled and I saw that I was 39-for-50 on my Oscar nomination predictions, some things were very easy to understand. I mean, I really didn’t think the Academy was going to nominate Nicolas Cage for his role in Pig, even though that was the best performance of the entire year. And it made sense that there were slight underperformances from films like West Side Story and Belfast, even though they both each had seven nominations and each film was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director.

But two things stood out in a huge way: the fact that the film I consider the frontrunner in many categories dominated the nominations even more than I thought possible, and that a little film from Japan made a whole lot more noise than I thought it possibly could have.

In short, I love the Oscars. Let’s dive into the nominations.

When the last football game was played on Sunday and we knew who would be competing in the Super Bowl, a wonderful thought occurred to me and I was instantly overjoyed: IT’S OSCAR SEASON, BABY! I no longer have to care about football, because movies are back and we are in the full swing of awards season!

FBC Oscar Coverage, Part X: Predicting The Winners (Part 5)

Well, it’s been a long road. We’ve talked about screenplays. We’ve talked about leading performances and supporting performances. We talked about all of the categories that are on when you decide to take a bathroom break. But now, it’s time for the two big categories. Let’s get predictin’!!!
