FBC 2025 Oscars Coverage, part 1: Which films are getting Oscar Buzz? (and what are those films about?)

FBC 2025 Oscars Coverage, part 1: Which films are getting Oscar Buzz? (and what are those films about?)

We are back talking about The Oscars, baby!

Nominations for Hollywood’s biggest night will be revealed this Sunday which means we need to make some predictions. And we cannot do that without seeing which films seem to be peaking at the right time. So, to do that, I made the Buzzmeter!!!

The Buzzmeter looks at which films are getting the most predictions in the major categories (Best Picture, Director, Acting and Screenwriting) and puts them into three piles: Definite locks, Lots of good buzz, and Wild Cards. I gave 5 points to every lock, three to a film with good buzz and a point to the Wild Cards. Also, if you haven’t seen the movie, I will give what I can only assume was the basic one sentence elevator pitch for the movie.

Let’s get buzz-examining!

FBC 2024 Oscar Coverage, part VI: Predicting the winners, part 2- The supporting acting categories

Normally, I would do screenplays before I even thought about getting into the acting categories, but I’m mixing it up. I’m doing so mostly because the screenplay categories feel very wide open while the two categories we’re delving into today are very solid locks. Basically, I need one more day to help decide who I want winning the harder categories.

FBC 2023 Oscars Coverage, Part VIII: Predicting the winners, part 2…

In the last few years, all of the major locks have come from the supporting acting categories. There have been no real surprises or upsets. You don’t see Olivia Colman winning over Glenn Close or Anthony Hopkins stealing Best Actor from Chadwick Boseman. There is something nice to know I can just check these off as guarantees, but also kind of a bummer to know there’s really no home for an upset.

Will 2023 be the same? Let’s take a look…

FBC 2022 Oscar Coverage, Part V: Predicting The Winners (Part 2)

Ok, in my last Oscars column, I predicted the screenplay categories. On to supporting performances!

One of my favorite things about the supporting categories this year is that both Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst are nominated for The Power Of The Dog, in which they are a married couple both in the movie AND in real life. Something about that just warms my heart, y’all.

Ok. Let’s get predicting!

FBC Oscar Coverage, Part VI: Predicting the Winners, Part II

Welcome back to my ever-extensive Oscar coverage. In the days leading up to the Oscars, I’ll be predicting every award, but focusing in-depth on what I call the “Big 8”. In my last installment, I predicted the Best Original & Adapted Screenplay Oscars, and you can check that out here.

Let’s get back to the party and cover the supporting acting performances. I feel like these are the two slam dunk categories, based on all of the buzz plus who has won some of the other major awards (SAG, BAFTA, Golden Globes, etc.)

Let’s party, supporting style!
