Week 9 of the NFL season is in the books. Matt Drufke has questions. Fancy Boys Football expert Jack Baker has the answers. Let’s mailbag.
Well, we’re over halfway done with the NFL season, and here’s where I want to start: When people talk about the MVP race, there seem to be three main contenders and they’re all quarterbacks: Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson, and Aaron Rodgers. But who is the best defensive player in the league right now?
Aaron Donald. Remember when he basically single handedly beat the Bears? He does that like every week. Dude is straight up unblockable. There’s a lot of other great defenders out there. TJ Watt, Khalil Mack, Myles Garret, Deforest Buckner, but Donald is still the best. He’s well on his way to winning a third defensive player of the year award.
Is there a more confusing team in the NFL than the Chicago Bears? They’ve lost three in a row, but are still second in their division and looking good for a wildcard spot. Some days, they look like a NFC contender, while other days it doesn’t look like they could hold their own against a high school team. They’re starting a Super Bowl MVP at quarterback, but are in the bottom five of most offensive categories. Jack, we’ve asked this before, but maybe things have changed: What are the Bears?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the Bears are a good defense tasked with carrying the worst offense in the NFL. Even before COVID and various other injuries decimated their offensive line they couldn’t block anybody.
The Bengals were out 5 offensive lineman two weeks ago and destroyed the Titans. The Bears were out four offensive lineman and their best running play was a fake punt carry by a backup linebacker.
They can’t pass. They can’t block. They can’t get plays in on time, or lined up on time. They’re the most penalized team in the NFL. They can’t convert third downs. They’re the only team in the NFL that can’t convert of fourth and one. They lead the NFL in third down pass routes run short of the first down marker. They should just start kneeling three times and punting.
Just how good are the Steelers and can they go undefeated?
Right now, the Steelers are the best team in the NFL. They have a great defense that can really get after the quarterback and a really good offense as well. I doubt they’re going undefeated though, one because it’s really, really hard to do. And two, Ben Rapelesberger will probably miss the next few games with a broken heart now that his favorite president and kindred spirit has lost.
Dalvin Cook has had himself a couple of amazing games and no one in the NFL has more rushing yards. But this year is a bonkers year for running backs, so tell me: Who is the best rusher in the game right now?
Dalvin Cook might be the most talented RB in the game today, but he has a lot of trouble staying healthy. He misses games like Trubisky misses receivers when throwing to his left.
Derrick Henry is the best running back in the NFL until someone else can singlehandedly carry their team to the AFC championship game. Ryan Tannehill averaged like 10 passes a game during the playoffs last year and the Titans still dominated. Derrick Henry is built like a defensive end but runs like a gazelle. Trying to tackle him is like stepping in front of a semi. Cook is great, but Henry is on another level.
No one is happier than me that you got another prediction wrong when you boofed on who would win the election. But, like Shakira says in the song “Try Everything”, you will not give up or give in. So, let’s end with week ten predictions, because there are three games here that have the potential to not just be really great games, but to set up the playoff picture. So, when it comes to Seahawks-Rams, Bills-Cardinals, and 49ers-Saints, who do you have winning?
I’d just like to remind you that the real election occurs when the Electoral College votes in December. There’s still plenty of time for the Supreme Court to intervene and decide that everyone who voted for Biden is a terrorist and ineligible to vote. I’ll take the Seahawks, Cardinals and Saints. I won’t give any reason but I think these pics will finally not give you a reason to make fun of me in a later mailbag.
